I have a question in in my mind since last many years. It is more than 50 years now since we are so called FREE citizens. Since our first Union budget (I have no clue of the first budget) till date there is no strong taxation/duties on some unwanted commodities such as tobacco, alcohol (intoxicating purpose)/liquor and such other health destructing and life taking commodities. By taxing these severely government will also help in balancing the budget fairly. Shall we assume that government is encouraging and giving shelter to these industries. (We are least concerned with what other country's policies are.
Will it be fair enough if we say that people sitting in parliament are playing with health and life of crore of people of our country.

Well Mr.Guest you seriously have no idea regarding the Taxation structure of our economy.
So just for removing your confusion let me tell you tobacco, alcohol & some of other narcotics you mentioned are taxed at very high rates.
As per constitution of our country indirect taxes are levied on all such products however the collection of taxes on tobacco products is with central government and the rest are subject matter of taxation revenue of respective state governments.

Very true Kshitij! In fact excise duty on cigarettes is the single largest contributer to the national exchequer.
Freedom, besides many other things, also (unfortunately) means freedom to smoke and freedom to drink provided we are not obstructing or hindering others freedom.
