Equity Research can be broadly divided into two types: Fundamental Analysis & Technical Analysis. Then, there is a thing called techo-fundamental analysis which combines a bit of both. Fundamental analysis deals with the fundamentals of the company while technical analysis deals with the movement of stock price. When you analyse the company, the industry it works in, the margins, profitability, etc.. you are doing fundamental analysis. When you analyse based on stock price movement, charts, waves, etc... you are doing technical analysis.

For equity research, I would recommend the course. Remember, it is a Certificate Course & not a Degree. CFA is another option you can look at. MBA finance is a generalised course but you can get into equity research with this degree.
As far as M&A is concerned, you can build on your experience in equity research.
