what is the difference between merchant bank and commercial bank?
Merchant Bankers are those who provide services to companies at the time of issue of Initial Public Offer (IPO) of shares in the market and the work relating to the same before and after the IPO. They also UNDERWRITE such offers, which will give good support to the Company floating IPOs. They are Governed by (mainly) SECURITIES EXCHANGE BOARD OF INDIA.

While any Commercial Bank can also do the above job as a separate business opportunity, the main functions of the Commercial Bank is to accept Deposits, give all the banking services to any one who enters the bank and lends money to business, personal etc.

Commercial Banks are Governed by the Reserve Bank of India for their Banking operations but they have to report to SEBI for the jobs they do as MERCHANT BANKERS

Hope this answers your query.
